|Title of the course: Electromagnetic
phenomena. For Mathematics' students. The starting point are Maxwell equations and Lorentz force. From these five postulates (that define
electric and magnetic fields) all electromagnetic phenomena in vacuum are deduced. The intrinsic relativistic nature of Maxwell-Lorentz electrodynamics is stressed. An introductory part deals with inertial systems, Galileo and Lorentz transformations.
Magnetic properties of matter are treated
by using hybrid models that mix classical laws with rules borrowed from quantum physics.
phenomena are treated as shown here. Light quanta: waves and particles. Classical and quantum description of two slits interference phenomena. Philosophical considerations are developed when required. (Course held till the a.y. 2009-2010).
