September 20-24, 2021 - UniversitĂ  degli Studi di Pavia, Dipartimento di Fisica, Via Bassi 6, Pavia, Italy

Scope

The course is aimed at graduated students (in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine, Engineering…) who are interested in advanced radiotherapy techniques, including hadron therapy, Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT), therapy with radionuclides and magnetic hyperthermia. The first day will be devoted to propaedeutic topics including radiation-matter interaction, dosimetry and conventional radiotherapy.

The school aims to provide an overview of the main physical, biological and medical aspects characterizing each of the aforementioned techniques, with focus both on basic principles and related research activities, and on clinical applications.

Lectures will be given by international experts including people working at the National Centre for Oncological Hadrontherapy (CNAO), one of the few centres in the world where patients are treated with Carbon ions. A virtual tour of the CNAO facility will be possible, as well as a visit to the Applied Nuclear Energy Laboratory (LENA), where BNCT research is performed at the research nuclear reactor and radionuclides for medicine are produced.
