Welcome to the web site of Photonics and Nanostructures research at the Physics Department of the University of Pavia. This portal includes the activity of two groups, namely the Solid State Theory and Photonics team and the experimental group operating at the Laboratory of Optical Spectroscopy. Since experimental and theoretical research of our groups is strongly interlinked, we are presenting a unique web page description that is broken down into specific research lines - most of which have an experimental and a theoretical part.
Our research evolves from solid state physics and optical properties of semiconductors and nanostructures, to recent advances in optical investigations of materials with micrometric and sub-micrometric structures - this area is broadly called nanophotonics and it is an exciting, rapidly evolving field of research. On one side, our activities are often centered around photonic crystals and their applications to a number of fundamental and device issues. On the other side, we do have a strong interest in electronic nanostructures and materials science issues like semiconductors and their heterostructures, metals and nanoparticles, polymers, with applications to interdisciplinary fields like ICT (Information and Communications Technologies), bio-sensing and nanomedicine, energetics. Theoretical research is developed both in support to experimental activities, and for basic investigations of nanophotonic systems (micro- and nanocavities, photonic crystals, plasmonic structures), radiation-matter interaction, and electrodynamical processes at classical and quantum levels.
